Did you know October is one of six months that have more than one birthstone? The birthstones for October are Tourmaline and Opal. Two completely different, yet equally as spectacular stones. The possibilities for these stones is endless, as they both come in many beautiful colors.
Opal
The name "Opal" originates from the greek word "opallios" which means to "see a change in color." Because opal is composed of microscopic silica spheres it diffracts light, which can display a rainbow of colors. If you believe in luck, this is the stone for you, as opal has been associated with good luck for centuries!
According to legend, people believed that opals fell from the sky in bolts of lightening, while other legend says that the creator came down on a rainbow, leaving colorful opals where his feet touched the ground.
Tourmaline
Tourmaline is derived from the Sinhalese words "tura mali", which means "stone of mixed colors." This description is fitting considering its make up. Tourmaline is a complex group of minerals with different chemical compositions, which give it a wide range of color possibilities. It is mined all over the world but in the US, it is mostly mined in Maine and California.
According to Egyptian legend, tourmaline found its array of colors on its journey up from the center of the earth when it passed through a rainbow. Many people believe that tourmaline can shield against radiation, pollutants, toxins, and negative thoughts.
