Those born in January probably know that this month’s birthstone is Garnet! A truly beautiful stone, Garnet is most commonly red, but comes in a plethora of other colors as well. It’s name was derived from the Latin word “granatum” which means seed, because of its resemblance of a pomegranate seed!
Did you know Garnets have long been carried by travelers to protect against accidents far away from home? Not only did it protect, it was also seen as a symbol for deep and lasting friendship.
It is a durable gemstone that is found in many places around the world, including Wyoming! As proof of Garnets durability, remnants of garnet jewelry have been found and traced back to the Bronze Age (2300 BC in Europe) Though garnets have been around for ages, its said that the Victorians made garnets very popular during their time period.
Like we mentioned before, Garnet comes in a rainbow of colors. It is a great option for jewelry as it is more affordable than other gems such as rubies, emeralds, and diamonds. Here is a sampling of the Garnet palette.
